How to Choose a Domain Name for a Business

A good business domain is easy to say, easy to remember, and easy to connect with the brand. The process should begin with the business, not with whatever happens to be available at a registrar.

Optimize for memory and clarity

Say candidate domains aloud. Ask whether a listener can type the name correctly after hearing it once. Avoid unnecessary punctuation, confusing character substitutions, and awkward words that require repeated explanation.

Choose an extension deliberately

.com remains familiar and broadly recognized, but newer extensions can work when they match the audience and brand. For AI companies, .ai can create immediate category signaling; for technology companies, .io remains common. The correct choice depends on audience expectations and the strength of the name itself.

Check the brand, not just the domain

A domain being available does not mean the name is legally clear or strategically wise. Search for existing businesses, products, confusingly similar brands, and trademark issues before investing heavily in identity work.

Have an acquisition fallback

If the ideal domain is taken, compare four paths: choose a different name, add a modifier, use another extension, or acquire the existing domain. Premium marketplaces are relevant only after those alternatives are considered.
