Domain Buying & Ownership

What to Do If the .com You Want Is Taken

A taken .com is a constraint, not an instruction to overpay. The right response depends on how strong the underlying business name is and how good the alternatives are.

Option 1: choose another name

Renaming is easiest before customers, press coverage, packaging, and legal work accumulate. If several strong names remain available, this can be the cheapest long-term solution.

Option 2: use a modifier

A short modifier can preserve the core name, but it should sound intentional rather than like a workaround. Test the full domain aloud.

Option 3: choose another extension

A relevant extension such as .ai, .io, or a country-code domain can work for the right audience. Check whether the matching .com creates confusion or belongs to an active conflicting brand.

Option 4: acquire the domain

If the exact .com materially improves the brand, compare marketplace pricing or contact the owner through a protected purchase process. Set a walk-away number before negotiation.
