Startup Naming

How to Choose a Startup Name

A startup name should make the company easier to remember and easier to recommend. The process is less about finding one magically perfect word and more about filtering candidates against a clear strategy.

1. Define the positioning

Write down the audience, problem, tone, and future scope of the company. Decide whether the name should sound technical, trustworthy, playful, premium, fast, human, or something else.

2. Generate across naming styles

Explore descriptive, evocative, compound, invented, and metaphorical directions. Variety prevents the first decent idea from becoming the default.

3. Run the spoken test

Say each name aloud in a sentence such as “I use ___.” Check pronunciation, spelling, and whether it survives being heard without visual context.

4. Check conflicts

Search the web, business directories, app stores, social platforms, and relevant trademark databases. Domain availability alone is not clearance.

5. Compare domain paths

For finalists, compare an affordable available domain with premium acquisition, a modifier, or another extension. Make the domain decision before investing heavily in identity assets.
