Build leverage through alternatives
Your strongest leverage is the ability to walk away. Shortlist other names and extensions before negotiating so the seller is not your only path forward.
Set three numbers
Define an opening range, a realistic target, and a hard walk-away number. The walk-away number should come from business value and alternatives, not from the seller’s asking price.
Keep communication simple
Avoid revealing unnecessary details about funding, urgency, or strategic dependence on the name. Make clear offers, document terms, and use the marketplace or a reputable transaction service for payment and transfer.
Know when not to negotiate
Some marketplaces or listings use fixed pricing. BrandBucket, for example, currently promotes no-haggle pricing on its curated marketplace. In that setting the decision is simply whether the listed price is worthwhile.
