What drives asking prices
Common factors include extension, word quality, length, memorability, commercial usefulness, linguistic simplicity, and the seller’s expectations. Comparable sales can provide context, but no two domains are identical.
A strong .com built from a common word may be priced very differently from an invented brandable name or a newer extension.
Price is not the same as value
An asking price is a seller’s offer, not an objective appraisal. Value depends on the specific buyer. The same domain may be strategically important to one company and irrelevant to another.
Set a walk-away number
Before negotiating, decide the maximum total cost you can defend using business logic. Include payment-plan costs, transaction fees if any, and the opportunity cost of tying up cash.
If the seller’s number exceeds the value of the best alternative, walking away is a valid outcome.
